Rather than produce goods ever more cheaply, being big meant that you acquired an onerous management structure and a bureaucratic culture. Merging companies often created more barriers between functions than it dismantled. History has shown that economies of scale are relevant only in markets where all the participants are playing by the same set of rules: as soon as someone invents a new – better – set of rules, it does not matter how efficient you are, you are still going to be outmanoeuvred.

Only the best information survives the evolutionary struggle: knowledge is the survival of the fittest information. It is a view evident from the way in which many organisations think about their existing data resources. ‘Data-mining’, for example, is a commonly promoted technique which, its proponents suggest, enables you to plunge into a mass of data and let the data – using neural networks and other sophisticated tools – tell their own ‘story’. The important messages will always surface, so the theory goes.

It is not constrained by gravity or three dimensions, and solid objects can change shape in ways which defy physical laws. We should not be suprised if it has become our preferred film set: why watch the physical world we live in every day when we could watch an entirely imaginary one designed to satisfy our wildest desires and fantasies? We are constantly trying to fit information around our decisionmaking processes and our knowledge bases, whereas what we should be doing is using the information as information.
